Botanic Gardens

Our last day on Madeira, and tonight we catch a flight home from what has been a lovely holiday.

We caught a bus up the hillside, yet again, this time to the Botanic Gardens. It only cost half the price of the Monte Palace Gardens, and it was good, but probably only about half as good as there.

The stand out features are the terrace with the chequerboard design that changes every year.

They also have a fantastic collection of cacti and succulents, some at least 15 feet tall.

Finally, the viewpoints with beautiful views over Funchal and of the road tunnels that criss cross the island and make travelling around so much easier.

We also found time to have a chocolate ice cream each, visit the Story Museum to learn about the history of the island, and absolutely finally, had a brilliant lunch and coffee at our favourite cafe.

We are now waiting for the bus to pick us up and take us to the airport, and we have two wonderful coconut cakes to eat on the plane.
