Khao Lak tsunami memorial

Caught a bus to Khao Lak this morning to visit the tsunami memorials in the area. The main one is a police boat, number 813. It was about a mile offshore when the tsunami hit in December 2004 and it was carried nearly 2 kilometres inland and left high and dry when the water retreated.
It is still where it was stranded and a large memorial park is currently being built around it. The town of Khao Lak was destroyed and we saw a marker near the beach that showed that the sea was five metres high at that point. The beach is long and shallow, and the waves got higher as they came onshore, which added to the level of destruction.
The whole town has since been rebuilt and we are staying here overnight and then hopefully on to Krabi in the morning.
